  1. The key points of this article are how effective data collected in schools can be across the country and elements of a data-driven system. Data can assess correlations between programs and outside indicators for what is truly improving test scores. When data is accurately collected and used, it eliminates the tough calls of what to cut when the school budget issue is brought up. It is easy to analyze what is and is not effective in the schools because there is now clear evidence of successful techniques and what needs improvement on. In addition, data-driven decision making system shares the best practices between schools.

There are many steps that go into creating an accurate data collecting system. The first must have diverse sources of data; this includes state tests, benchmark assignments, technology support, and professional development. The next step is to make sure there aren't any discrepancies, such as missing, incorrect, or inconsistent data. Then the data is stored and reports are created to aid in analyzing the results and recommending corrective measures.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it gave steps of how to implement the data-driven decision making model. When this system is taking place, it gives better feedback for teachers to show if their teaching styles are, in fact, working. These would most likely show the teachers who teach using inquiry succeed more than the traditional teachers.

  2. The key points of this article are the following:
NCLB, while a largely controversial act for education, has stimulated a rise data collection in schools for the purpose of making decisions. In addition to NCLB requirements, data collection serves to identify critical issues in schools. By having concrete facts and figures, administrators now have a powerful tool to evaluate student and teacher performance from many different angles and can report this information to the public. This also has benefits for individual students, who can, with the help of data, identify weak areas for improvement. Data is assembled through many different ways, but districts often use systems and software made for them or which they make themselves. The article goes on to outline the steps of data collection, which involve knowing what you are looking for, and analyzing the data properly with respect to that goal--almost like a scientific method. With this data, districts will be able to make educated decisions about changes that need to be made.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because I now know there are many different perspectives that not only need to be taken into account, but WILL be taken into account when I am teaching. Inquiry and differentiation go hand-in-hand, and receiving data about how my classroom is differentiated will help me make decisions at the classroom and individual level.

  3. The key points of this article are data-driven decision making can help school districts in informed decision making, boosting overall school performances and improve student achievement. With the news data collection systems our school districts can be more on top of what is going on in there respective district. For example, many schools are force to cut programs because of the tight budgets. If the schools have a data system letting them know about each and every program and its successfulness then it will be easier for schools to know which program is not beneficial for the school. The article gave examples such as student’s attendance and student achievements to give a clear understanding of the effectiveness of the program. If school districts work as a group or team to explore the data they collect and share it with faculty, staff and the community there could be a change in the school environment and education. The most important aspect is to compare results year to year. If the school is going to incorporate a data-driven system, then they should actually use it and take small steps at making the school successful.

The article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because the feedback that is received from the data-driven system promotes a stronger communication between the teachers, superintendents and even the parents. By receiving this data and seeing what I as a teacher need to assist my students in can be beneficial to the students and my individual career as an educator.

    1. That's a good point you made about cutting programs and allowing the data to show whether the program is effective or not. Most people would think data driven decision making deals with just classroom and content issues, but it goes well beyond that.

  4. The key points of this article are how analyzing data driven instruction and how we can implement it inside our schools and classrooms to improve performance across the country. This type of data analysis helps educators see critical performance issues at the school level. Schools can now narrow learning gaps by determining student achievement inside the classroom. Having electronic information about school run programs will help the schools see what is producing the best results and what is in their best interest to cut from the schools budget. This type of data analysis will help us see how classrooms are performing from each year. Either seeing the growth or decline of the classes that are being taught.

The article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because data driven instruction will help me better understand what techniques will work inside my own classroom. Having the results in front of me and seeing what I need to do inside my classroom to help my students perform their best.

  5. The key points of this article were how data collection and analysis procedures, allow school district officials to make informed decisions based on data rather than assumptions. An important use that was mentioned was using data collected on students to predict if a student is on the verge of being considered 'at risk.' This data can't be completely black and white where it is based off of only standardized testing of students. The article mentioned the importance of putting a face on the quantitative data. Alternative assessments must also be used in order for the data to be an accurate representation of the students performance in class. Data like this can pin point areas where students are struggling and can also can determine what areas they are doing well in. Showing students where they excel is just as important as showing them where they need help.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because in order for teachers to give the data necessary to make accurate results teachers should not only keep logs on student progress but also have students create portfolios that showcase their progressive work not just a three or four scantron with a name on the bottom.

  6. The key points of this article are although data collection has been around for at least the past two decades, most districts throughout the country are using NCLB to move into data-driven decision making and also how this collected information can be effectively used to analyze test scores and achievement throughout schools. Data-driven decision making can also be used in various other ways including to improve both the teacher quality and the curriculum, and also to share the best techniques to other schools and districts. Through the data collection and analysis schools will no longer need to make decisions based on assumptions, but rather on cold, hard facts. By using data, administrators could help identify programs that are ineffective and not helping students, and in-turn either modify or cut the ineffective program. For the analysis to be completely accurate and tell the whole story of what is going on, various information must be collected through such methods as classroom observations, surveys, and various assessments. The analysis should also be based on data measured consistently over a given period of time to be effective, since one test cannot show progress.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it shows me just how important data-driven decision making can be. It is clear that it may take a while to implement this, but in the long run it is well worth it. Data-driven decision making can improve schooling in many different areas and since information can be shared so easily, it could also help improve some under performing/achieving school districts. Real time feedback can be provided allowing us to see what may or may not work with out students. Data-driven decision making should give us the proper information we need to improve ourselves so that we can maximize our abilities to help prepare our students for their futures, both in their school and professional careers.

  7. The key points of this article are the collection of data through out schooling and how important we recently realized it can be. Data has been collected through out schools for years now, but faculty members never knew how much power that data had until now. Faculty members are using this collection of data to improve curriculum, improve teacher quality, narrow achievement gaps between schools, and to communicate education issues. Now that faculty members understand the importance of this data they can begin to recreate the school environment so students are reaching their full potential.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because with the use of these data-collection tools, I can learn how to create a better school environment for every student. I can also help other teachers perform their best in sculpting a better class room. This can also help me rewrite lesson plans and become a better teacher as a whole. I can see what techniques work with each and every student, so I can help them reach their full potential.

  8. The key points of this article deal with how data is used in schools in order to make decisions on how best to teach and what the best material to teach is. Schools use data from various types of assessments to look at what are strong points and gaps in student learning. There are many benefits to this type of system. First, it can help improve teacher quality. When teachers have the data in front of them on how students are doing on their assessments, they can tailor their lessons to address the specific student needs based on the data. Second, the achievement gap among schools can be narrowed. Third, this system promotes open communication between different schools to discuss what methods work the best for this type of data driven system. After all, at the end of the day we are all here to help students. This data driven system works to address the specific issues and topics that students are struggling with.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry by helping me understand ways to address specific student needs. By knowing spefically what students need to re-learn, I can structure my lessons in such a way to address those concerns. If a class or school is struggling, the methods mentioned in this article can help increase achievement in these struggling schools.

    1. Do you think that numerical data alone will tell us what students need? Yes, numbers present a concrete "fool-proof" argument for or against something, but do you think that quantitative assessment and test is even an accurate gauge of individual performance in the first place?

  9. The key points of this article are the specifics of implementing data driven instruction to a school. It points out the benefits of being data driven, which include narrowing achievement gaps and figuring out the root causes of problems. It helps teachers and stakeholders to understand what is being done well, and how to fix what isn't. It talks of data collection, management, and analysis.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it points out the importance of rigor and assessment in education. Asking the right types of questions, and by asking rigorous questions, you can find out where your instruction is falling short and where it's succeeding. Knowing the strong points and weak points of your students' understanding opens up time for more focused lessons and more depth in your lesson plans.

  10. This article is mainly talking about how data driven instruction should be implemented into schools. It explains the importance of data driven instruction and how it benefits the community, students and the administration. It gets everyone involved and in return everyone is benefitting from it. Data driven instruction is a process in which a school's assess students, formatively, analyze the data collected from those assessments, and allow change in the instructional system to help improve students understanding. In this process student differentiation can be more diminished, teacher quality can improve, as well as curriculum development. This happens by allowing teachers to analyze data and scope out where the problems lie more accurately.
