The article discusses the Common Core State Standards, which are standards that outline certain literacy goals students should achieve at each grade level. The goal is to ensure that students are prepared for college and the professional work force. The Standards apply to English Language Arts as well as literacy standards for other core subjects. Students must be able to read, write and speak the language of different subject content and thus the Standards outline specific literacy goals required for college and career readiness. These standards are not meant to replace curriculum, but to be incorporated together to enrich learning. The Common Core Standards are simply outlines for what students should achieve; it is up to the individual schools, administrators and teachers to determine how they will help students achieve these goals.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it continues to support the idea that effective learning is achieved through inquiry and goal setting rather than memorization. The Standards are an outline of what is important besides the actual content of class. Certain literacy standards are important to college and career readiness, which in connection with the curriculum produces deeper learning and understanding. This is important because it shows how the education system has shifted towards incorporating literacy into each core subject to further prepare students for college and careers.

    1. Excellent understanding of how districts must interpret the CCSS within their own framework! Additionally you realize this learning is no longer about the ability to memorize anymore, we must ensure we are developing skills as life long learners.

  2. The article discusses the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. This article explains what these new standards are and what they are not. The Common Core Standards are a more specific version of the College and Career Readiness standards, with the main goal of the Common Core being college and career readiness of students. The Standards are meant to supplement, not replace, content standards. Also they do not dictate to teachers how to reach these goals, but allow teachers or curriculum developers to decide on this. Furthermore, although the Common Core Standards were created by the U.S. government, since education is still a right delegated to the states, New York State has augmented some standards, placing an emphasis on world cultures and their perspectives. Lastly, this article points out how the idea of literacy has changed in the 21st century. Literacy can no longer be thought of as solely the ability to read a book. Today students have to know how to read all of the different types of media which they encounter in their daily lives. With this is mind, literacy is no longer just something to be taught in English classes, but now plays a pivotal role in the other subject areas as well, such as history and science.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because the implementation of these standards is another example in which school reform is compelling teachers to move away from students’ rote memorization in their classroom. In order to reach the goal of the Common Core, teachers will have to change the way they present their content to their students. The Common Core Standards are aiming to provide students the necessary skills needed in today’s competitive world. These skills will not be gained by students just memorizing the material. Students will have to be stimulated and engaged and a way to accomplish this is teaching through inquiry.

There are several key points in the article. The main point of this article is to define what the Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy are and what they are not. The standards are an effort to ensure all students are prepared for college and careers by the time they graduate high school. The standards are not a means of telling teachers how to teach or everything that should be taught. They are designed to show what is expected from students only; the rest is up to the teacher because as the standards state, the focus is on the results not the means. In addition, besides ensuring college and career readiness, these standards have a more specific goal—to promote literacy across all content areas in a way that reflects the current century. Literacy is no longer being left for English Language Arts classes because different subjects require a different set of literacy skills for success and these skills are also thought to be necessary for all students’ future endeavors.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it shows the growing importance of inquiry in the classroom. Students cannot just be taught facts because that is not a good way to learn a subject and provides students with no skills besides memorization. Students have to be taught to think critically in all that they do because that is a skill that will continuously benefit them. The best way for students to think critically is through inquiry, which teachers have to become accustomed to using it to prepare their students for the future.

  4. Key points of this article describe what the Common Core State Standards are and how they can be implemented into our education system. These standards, mainly for ELL and Literacy in History, Science or Technical Subjecs, were developed to specify the literacy skills and understandings required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines. CCSS are (1) research and evidence based, (2) aligned with college and work expectations, (3) rigorous, and (4) internationally benchmarked. Even though they state what each student should know by the end of each grade, it is important to keep in mind that they do not define how teachers should teach, nor do they describe all that can or should be taught.

This article helps to better understading teaching and learning through inquiry because it is yet another document that shows the importance of not simply learning the facts or what the textbook has to offer, but to think critically, research and imply the learned knowledge in real world. Thanks to the goals set for the students in each grade, they will develop the skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening that are the foundation for any creative and purposeful expression in language. These common goals seem to be a perfect way of improving our education system, but it is also important that in order for this to happen, the teachers will have to make sure that their lesson plans 1) follow the goals, 2) are creative and enaging for the students, and 3) are motivating so that our students want to learn and enjoy this preperation for their futures in the ‘real world’, and not simply going to school because they have to.

    1. I am glad you recoognize no one should tell you how to teach in your classroom, unless of course your instruction has clear flaws and is egregious! That said, be sure to teach what is to be learned as you clearly identify the four major variables!

  5. The article discusses the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. Throughout the article it is repeated that these standards are meant to be an addition to content standards and not replace them. In all it is being geared towards college readiness for students in having specific guidelines, they must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas not just ELA. This is very effective for not often are students prepared for the type of lab work that is linked with any science course on a college standard. With having these standards set in place students will begin to be more exposed to certain aspects of college before actually entering a university. The Common Core Standards are outlines for what students should achieve as said before it is to be brought into already used curriculum, it is up to the individual schools, administrators and teachers to determine how they will help students achieve these goals in preparing them for the necessities of college work.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because if further reinforces the fact that classroom settings are not to be based on just memorization of certain informatory facts that will pop up on a regents exam. In no way shape of form is that getting these students prepared for life after the regents. In my high school it can be noted that this was the case for every senior after his or her first semester at college repeatedly said in no way shape or form has any classroom setting from high school prepared me for college work. These new standards that are to be incorporated with already used curricula will ensure that no student feels that they cant handle what college or any other schooling after high school can throw at them and that is what is most important about this!

  6. The key points of this article are discussing the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects for grades K-12. These standards are made to help kids "properly" prepare for college and their future careers. These standards are divided into four characteristics, research and evidence based, aligned with college an work expectations, rigorous, and internationally benchmarked. The CCSS strive to have students understand and enjoy reading works of literature through critical reading and cogent reasoning. The CCSS set the goals for teachers guide their students to achieve, but leave the development of the curriculum up to the teacher to design. These Standards hope to make college and career-ready students that demonstrate independence, build strong content knowledge, and respond to the demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline. The students should also be able to comprehend, critique, value evidence, use technology and digital media, and understand other perspectives and cultures.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because when I become a teacher, there is a strong possibility that I will be working with the Common Core State Standards. I like being introduced to things that I am going to see and use later in my career, rather than just in the classroom. As a teacher I will need to set goals for both myself and my students to strive for. I will need to design fun and interesting ways to learn the content material, to help meet these goals and prepare my students for college and their future careers. Students need to be taught skills and critical thinking because they will need to apply these capabilities in college as well as in life. Memorization of facts without being taught proper skills, will not benefit students for their future in today's world.

  7. The key points of this article are to show that the common core standards are meant to help students achieve academic goals, which do not deal with memorization and spitting out information. The points of the standards are to prepare students for college and after college for real life understanding. Reading comprehension for students to learn the language of all of their class subjects so they can use what they learn in the classroom environment in a real life situation. It is also important to understand that these standards should not replace the curriculum that students are learning only to help enhance the learning for student’s betterment. The standards also do not set how teachers and administrators should use the standards but gives them a free range to use them in a way which would best help the students in the school environment.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because these standards were not made to make teachers lives more difficult but to help teachers enhance the learning of their students as well as help teachers make a curriculum more suited to helping the students later in life as well. It also helps teachers to use reading comprehension in all subjects not just English so student do not just memorize the material they are learning but to understand the material and get students prepared for the college and real life settings.

    1. Helping a student learn to be alife long learner....what a concept! Excellent point. Too often we only worry about what our class concepts are and do not infuse other content areas within our special area of focus! All disciplines are in some way or another connected!

  8. The key points of this article are……..
The Common Core State Standards were created to help ensure that all students are college and career ready in literacy no later than the end of high school. The Standards are research and evidence based, aligned with college and work expectations, rigorous, and internationally benchmarked. This fits many of the topics we have gone over already in class. Everything we are doing today in education reform is for college readiness and job preparation in order to compete with other countries. Characteristics of students who are college and career ready in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language include independence, strong content knowledge, comprehension, communication, and understanding of other cultures and values. Each standard is given very specifically, and with which grade level and course it should be used for. Students are expected to meet these standards.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because…..
As future teachers, we will need to know all of these standards. Whether or not we believe in every standard given, we need to make sure each student is successful. Using these standards will help prepare the student for college and work. It will require teachers to teach more literacy and reading strategies, no matter what the subject. Therefore, it will help shape your curriculum, but will not completely control it. Teachers will be able to teach through inquiry, which will allow the students to critically think and become prepared for future learning.

This article discusses the Common Core State Standards. The standards are very important to the students in the classroom because they prepare them to be college and career ready by the time they graduate high school. It is important to understand that these standards are not replacing the content standards already in place, but adding to them and as a result, will benefit the students in preparing them for the “real world.” Throughout the article they reference being college and career ready numerous times. “A vision of what it means to be a literate person in the twenty-first century.” By meeting the standards students’ will develop the skills in reading, writing, language and other core subjects that are the “building blocks” of being proficient in today’s world. The standards truly prepare students for life outside of school. They will be able to survive in the “real world” being able to read, write and comprehend what is going on around them.

This article helps me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because…

The Common Core State Standards helps me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it only adds to the content standards already in place. It’s not just telling your students to memorize this concept or that concept; instead it allows teachers to add inquiry based lessons into their teaching plans. Therefore, students are really learning the material and processing the information learned for the future. I think back to my senior year of college we had an assembly and our high school had some freshman in college come and speak to us that graduated the year before. What I remember most was the majority of the speakers saying, they weren’t prepared for the papers in college, they were lost in math early on and had to put in more time catch up. I believe with this Common Core State Standards, students will be more prepared after leaving high school when they enter college or work place. However, in order for this to be successful teachers will have to make sure they are putting more time into their lesson plans, achieving goals they set out for themselves and continue to challenge their students to be the best that they can be.

  10. The key point of this article is the Common Core State Standards. The goal of these standards is to make sure students are prepared for college and anything that may come after college is done. Students must be able to read, write and speak the language of subject areas. The Standards outline specific literacy goals required for college and career paths.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it shows that learning is something that is achievable rather than memorizing and regurgitating. The standards are there as important guidelines that students needs to be prepared for college and their career path in the future.

  11. The key points to this article discuss the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. These standards stress the literacy skills required for college and career readiness. They will allow students to attain knowledge and skills that can be applied not only to the classroom and work place but also in everyday life. The article talks about how there are specific requirements for reading, writing, listening and language; however they do not have to be separately addressed. The skills promoted by these standards can be practiced in each subject area through many different ways of teaching. The standards are not meant to restrict the topics or ways in which a teacher may teach her class. They simply set requirements for what the students must have the ability to accomplish. Through these standards students will be able to use critical thinking and apply it in college, work and life. They will allow students to actively engage in text, build knowledge and explore different point of views. These standards present a more rounded way of education by incorporating literacy in all subjects and teach students to be able to read, write and speak about a variety of texts.

This article better helps me understand teaching and learning through inquiry because by using inquiry and critical thinking, students can apply their knowledge and skills to various subjects. Students often separate different classes and the skills and type of knowledge they need for those classes. When they go to English class they focus on writing correctly and thinking to construct a paper. However, when they get to science class they leave this knowledge behind and focus on facts. As teachers we need to be able to incorporate critical thinking and inquiry in our lessons, projects and other assignments to allow the students to develop their skills for building knowledge and creating a deeper understanding of the concepts.

  12. This article outlines the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. The CCSS are the standards that all students are required to know. However, they are in no way meant to limit or dictate the way teachers teach. As the article says a number of times, teachers are encouraged to go beyond what is outlined in the CCSS, and incorporate a wide variety of material into the curriculum and apply the fundamentals outlined in the CCSS in any number of ways.

This article helps me understand teaching through inquiry, because it strongly emphasizes that the Common Core is meant to outline the fundamentals of what a student should know. Teachers are free to educate by encouraging students to take an active interest in their learning through inquiry. I noticed that many of the recent additions to the CCSS require that students synthesize what they have learned and apply it in ways that require critical thinking and learning through inquiry. This leaves ample room for teachers to construct their individual lesson plans to center around what the students are interested in learning about, while still meeting the requirements of the Common Core.

  13. This article discusses the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. The Common Core State Standards were created to help educators, but more so the students. With these standards as a guide, teachers know what the students are expected to know during the course of each year. Now a lot of the standards are made to prepare the students for college and beyond. These standards are not only for ELA. All of the skills listed throughout the CCSS are needed in all subjects. Students must be able to read, write and speak properly in order to be successful.

This article helps me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because as a future educator, I need to know what my students need to know to be successful. This article also helps me because I need to be able to help my students see the link between all of their classes and even their surroundings. Making the material more real for them gives the students a better understanding (or so I hope).

  14. The key point in this article is that the common core is s guideline to what teachers need to incorporate into their lessons. It is not just for the teachers of reading, for example, but math teachers should also use the reading standards in their lessons. It will help the students understand the material better if all the subjects follow the same reading curriculum. However, there is no correct way to go about these standards.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because I will be able to better my students with some of the standards. I will be able to help them understand something if they are struggling with reading or writing. It also encourages the inquiry based learning process.

This article discusses the Common Core State Standards. It describes the goals of teachers and students in each grade. The main goal for teachers is to prepare their students for College and Career readiness.
As specified by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association, the standards are 1) research and evidence based 2) aligned with college and work expectations 3) rigorous and 4) internationally benchmarked. It set the requirements for ELA and for literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. THe standards do not mandate everything. Teachers and curriculum developers still have room to play. They can still make their classroom their own, and put their own flair on the curriculum.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because…..

This is another article that gives us information that will help us become great future teachers. We are one step closer to reaching perfection in education. As future teachers, we want to make sure our students know the information we are teaching them and they arent just memorizing it to take the test.
In order for us to be good teachers, we must know what our students do not know so that we can help them achieve success in each grade level.

  16. The article discusses the K - 12 Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects. These standards are supposed to help achieve the goal that all students are college and career ready in literacy no later than the end of high school. These standards describe what the literacy goals of students should be by the end of each year.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it shows us the Core State Standards are not supposed to define how teacher are supposed to teach. The standards should be supplemented by a well planned, content rich curriculum which will help educators accomplish the literacy goals of students at each grade level.

  17. The key idea of Paul Lockhart’s “A Mathematician’s Lament” is that there has to be a fundamental change on how we teach mathematics in schools today. Lockhart believes that math is really an art and that society has made math into a boring tool to be used by science and technology. He thinks our education system destroys a student’s natural curiosity towards math. Lockhart proposes that students should be allowed to pose their own math problems and that they should be allowed to create their own explanations and proofs to these problems.

This book helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because I was able to reflect on my own math experiences as a student in high school. Maybe if my own initial math learning experiences had not been so rote and dedicated to formula memorization, I would have pursued a study of mathematics at an earlier stage in my life.

  18. The key point of this article is to make the reader familiar with what the learning standards are for English Language Arts and Literacy in New York State. The Common Core State Standards are derived from research and evidence. They help students prepare fully for college and future work responsibilities, and they are challenging.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it explains that these standards are set up for teachers to use their creativity while teaching. The standards set goals where students should be and the teachers need to help fulfill those goals by using their own techniques and strategies, and providing their own tools. Though they don't provide the way teachers should teach, I think it would be a good idea to at least provide some guidelines or suggestions to the teachers. If they put in enough research to figuring out what the students should know in order to be ready for post high schools graduation, then they should have an idea of what techniques may work the best. Of course, teachers wouldn't be required to use these techniques, but they would be very helpful especially if there is evidence showing how students learn best.
