  1. The key points of this article are the benefits of project-based learning and the techniques in which to implement it. When students are engaging in project-based learning, they are developing cross-curriculum skills and seeing the real-world relevance connected to what they are learning. This is essential for students because when they do not see connections to their world, they seem to not put all their effort into understanding the material. Moreover, students will retain material learned this way more than when they solely read textbooks. This is likely because the class would be discovering the information on their own. Project-based learning also builds confidence and enhances communication skills.

There are numerous ways to implement project-based learning. Students can incorporate technology into their projects, increasing their ability to use different aspects of technology as well as developing their research skills. Teachers can also have students present their work, leading to feeling more comfortable in front of the class.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it shows the advantages of when students work in groups, and therefore teach themselves the material. Everyone in a group has different advantages, therefore when learning from other students, other perspectives and methods of solving a problem are given.

    1. Jackie,

You bring up the use of technology in PBL learning, but what about non technology based approaches? Not all classrooms (as we have seen in our observations) have the technological capabilities what we would like, so I am interested to know how effective you think PBL can be without the use of technology?

  2. The key points of this article are to explain how project-based learning can benefit individuals more than the traditional style of learning which is usually through textbooks and readings. Project learning is the concept that students work together in small groups researching problems and using organizational skills while communicating with one another.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because this style of learning is more effective than the regular style of learning. From project learning, students develop a deeper understanding of the material and also gain confidence in their work. Project learning helps students to work on their organizational skills, retain the knowledge gained, and also integrate technology into curriculum. It's a good way for students to think critically and learn about real world issues.

    1. ...and knowing what a student actually knows is the most important thing we can do to redirect our intruction or further the individuals needed level of inquiry, above or below the class norm. Remind me to share next class what special education really means!

  3. The key points of this article are the importance of incorporating project-based learning into our classrooms today. The use of this type of education can change the achievements of students. The idea of project-based learning is the students are to perform tasks that are student directed. The students demonstrate what they have learned in the “projects” that are assigned for activities. Teachers can tell if students are truly applying what they have learned to the work because you can visual listen and see the students work. This is where students can apply critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills. The skills that student’s use in the project based learning are not emphasized in other types of learning methods. These are key skills that students will possess and can make them achieve in school. The assessment of a project based learning activity is easy to see because students are doing the work with guidance from the teacher. We as teachers see the progress of the student’s capabilities and work from this type of learning method.

This article helps me to better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because this method of learning works hand in hand with inquiry. Project based learning is all about the students critically thinking and working themselves to achieve the end product. This method gives the teacher knowledge of what knowledge the student has taken in and how productively they have used the information.

  4. The key points in this article emphasize the importance of having ones students engaged in the learning experience as much as possible through the use of project learning rather than the traditional lecture, practice and test method. When teachers just throw material at students, they will just either throw it back on a test or let it fall to the ground because they don't care for what is being taught. When students are actually challenged and even struggling with a topic they become more invested and interested in what is being taught. Also it can't just be any project it has to be something that interests the students. The best way to figure out what interests the students is to actually get to know them and taking time to understand their learning habits. This will allow teachers to introduce projects most of the students will be engaged by.
This article helps me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because this method of learning because the most important part of inquiry based learning is that it is student centered and that's exactly what project based lessons accomplish. Creating a lesson around what interests students will keep students engaged and motivated to complete tasks and to be open to new idea's and concepts.

  5. The key points of this website push for the improvement of the K-12 learning process. The George Lucas Education Foundation proposes to do this by documenting, disseminating, and advocating for innovative, replicable and evidence based strategies that prepare students to thrive in their future education, careers, and adult lives. The emphasis on project-based learning and the importance of having it in the classroom is seen throughout the website. This site goes about sharing concepts through the use of videos, blog forums, and group discussions.

This website can help me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry by supplying me with a variety of strategies and perspectives pertaining to many subjects. With these tools I can begin to better understand and utilize project-based learning in the classroom. Through this website I can go directly to the grade level and subject in which I will be teaching to view other professional opinions on what procedures seem to work and what I might want to stay away from. This site is a great place for any teacher to find new ideas to incorporate into their classroom lessons.

  6. The key points of this article are to make known how effective project-based learning is for our students. It allows students to collaborate together and explore some real-world application problems while also helping students important skills across the curriculum. This is an important approach to teaching because it maximizes the useful time while students are in school. It can link classes together and teach our students multiple things at once as opposed to one period of math and another of English. Students are more likely to gain a deeper understanding of subject matter under this approach since they can relate to it better and it can also help students develop confidence in themselves.

Another key point is how you can use project-based learning to use technology in the classroom. The world relies so much on technology today, and this teaching style will introduce new technology to our students, which could prepare them for the future.

This article helps me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it allows for student exploration on all sorts of technology. It allows them to see real world connections to improve their learning and can help them build up team work skills. Project-based learning helps our students grow as people instead of just someone who is strong in certain subjects. It helps prepare them for their futures. Instead of being traditionally assessed through tests, essays or reports, project-based learning brings meaning into the assessment and can help liven up our classrooms.

    1. Steve,

You mention that PBL can link classes together and not present the various subjects as discrete entities. I agree that this is a useful practice throughout the K-12 curriculum, but can we totally implement this throughout all classrooms? Even if all the teachers are on board with this idea, are there certain topics in the curriculum that simply cannot be related to others?

  7. The main focus of this website is to give future and current educators resources which will allow them to understand project-based learning and to implement it. PBL is a new way of teaching which involves having students interact with and attempt to solve real world problems. These problems must be presented in a way which forces students to interact with the subject area in question in a deep and meaningful matter. There must be a reason for which they need to acquire new knowledge and skills to solve a problem presented to them. This knowledge that they have gained must then be synthesized into some sort of assessment which not only tests their knowledge of the subject area, but their ability to convey it in an informed and appropriate manner.

This helps me better understand learning through inquiry as PBL is essentially as inquiry based as one can get. It removes almost all teacher lectures from the class and creates an environment which the students, with guidance from the teacher, can create ideas, investigate methods, and form opinions on their own. IBL is also concerned with ensuring students are able to communicate effectively within the subject that they are studying, and PBL ensures that this happens with their unique types of assesments.

  8. The main points of this article deal with the idea of project based learning. Specifically, this article tells how teachers can implement project based learning into the curriculum. The focus of our curriculum is shifting towards showing real world applications of concepts that are learned in school. PBL strives to help give these concepts real world applications.

Another important side effect of project based learning is the idea of collaboration. In today's society, people must know how to work together effectively in a collaborative environment. By using PBL, we can teach this valuable skill of collaboration to students in school. This will ultimately prepare them better for the real world.

A third benefit of project based learning is this idea gets students more involved and captivated by content in schools. When students are actually getting their hands dirty, they are more likely to be engaged in the activities. In my experience, students who are "talked at" for 40 minutes are not as likely to gain a true understanding of the material. When students get their hands dirty through project based learning, they will be more likely to gain a rich understanding of the material being presented.

Project based learning is one of the best ways to integrate inquiry based learning into our classrooms. Inquiry based learning hinges on the idea of students discovering concepts and ideas. What better way to allow students to discover concepts and ideas than through project based learning?

  9. The key point of this article is to give future and current teachers resources that can help them understand project based learning, PBL, and use PBL in their classroom. The purpose of using problem based learning in the classroom is to make the classroom more well rounded and dynamic for the student and applying what you’re teaching in your subject area to the world the students live in today. I think that this idea is so important especially in Social Studies because students are constantly saying this is in the past why do I need to know it. However, as a teacher using PBL, you should be able to connect that past event to something occurring today so that the students find the subject useful. This site goes on to give videos, strategies, teaching guides, and tutorials so that educators in all areas can understand the important of using PBL in their classroom. Today’s students want to learn, teachers just need to find new unique ways to grab their attention.

This website can help me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because PBL helps remove things like lecturing and power points from the classroom and helps teacher implement meaningful hands on activities where students can experience things in any subject. A student would much rather be research, looking at primary sources, using manipulatives in math, or doing labs in science than having a teacher speak at them and show them words on a power point.

  10. The key points in this article is what project based learning is, who advocates for it, what information we have to support it's effectiveness, and the professional development available for teachers to use project based learning in their classrooms. Project based learning is an exercise in learning through doing, and it helps students learn while also addressing real world problems and developing real world skills. The support for PBL is overwhelming, experts and statistics throughout the world support the results of project based learning, but the implementation can be rather tricky. In a curriculum that, especially in mathematics, is so cut and dry, so defined, it can be hard to invent a project for students that will facilitate the learning of knowledge that the state tests demand be taught.

These articles can help me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because project based learning is entirely about inquiry. Facilitating students' natural curiosity and innate problem solving abilities is definitely an effective way to teach through inquiry. Giving your class a real life problem that they're capable of solving, with some guidance of course, builds their ability to not only ask questions but to realize what effective questions really are. They learn not only how to work together, but to determine what needs to be discovered, and hopefully discover it themselves. Project based learning facilitates a more open structure for paths on which children learn, and it's generally more applicable to life outside of the classroom, which is really the point of education in the first place.

  11. This article is all about project-based learning, providing a background and context of PBL as well as several real-world examples of project-based learning is. Essentially, PBL is based on the idea of "learning by doing" and is a method for teachers to explore the direct applications of their discipline with their students, and serves as an alternative assessment to didactic testing and papers.

I particularly liked the math teacher who used her skills from her time as a bridge builder to have her students create a school using math skills.

This helps me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because it is yet another example of how to break the mold of the typical classroom. PBL truly does break the mold in that it looks for perspectives outside of the classroom. PBL can even be expanded into service learning, which serves a practical purpose and gives relevance and rigor to curricula across the disciplines.

  12. The key points in this article are to show how project based learning activities and projects can enrich students schooling and put more emphasis on hands on projects. Students learn by doing projects and research rather than being lectured to inside the classroom. As a teacher you must get rid of the idea of curriculum and put more focus on what the students need to learn at the moment. This puts the learning experience back into the students hands, getting them interested in topics and subjects. PBL can help students see where they will actually be using this material in real world settings. They are able apply what they learned inside the classroom to real life applications.

This helps me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because project based learning is just another form of inquiry based learning. Students play active roles inside the classroom and in their own learning experiences with a PBL style classroom. Students learn through doing projects and coming up with their own results.

  13. The key points of this article are the benefits of project based learning. I really like the whole idea of project based learning because it really emphasizes the importance of a student focused classroom. Not to say the students run the class, but if they at least feel like they are, it may be a good thing. I also really appreciate the fact that the students can feel like they're constructing the knowledge for themselves. It really encourages retention of the information and clearer understanding of the material as well.

This article can help me better understand teaching and learning through inquiry because that's basically the point of this style. While I will facilitate, there's no doubt in my mind that through this type of design, students will be driving their own education. In this way, they will be running head on into questions about what they're doing to lead to a deeper understanding of the concepts rather than just the content. Thus leading to actual enlightenment, rather than just enough information and understanding to do well on a regent and then never recall it again.

  14. Project based learning is a perfect example of how to incorperate communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. Students wil be able to understand the topic of discussion on a more intimate level. The article explains that the students can present the information to others which in turn can build student's confidence. The students can work collaboratively and come up with creative ways to present their new knowledge. Project based learning screams inquiry since it results in students critically analyzing a situation, understanding it with others and voicing what they learn clearly, so that others can come to an understanding of the topic. Most importantly students understand it the way they way want with a facilitator there to weed out misconceptions, ultimately resulting in a robust understanding of the topic.
